What is her uncommon birth surname?

Who was England playing?

12. There are two regions right next to each other, wedged in between two countries. They are both referred to as the same shape, though neither is that shape. One of the two is a region neither country lays claim to (and no one wants); the other is a region they both lay claim to. Name the shape.

Of note, its name changed about 40 years ago: its old name had "John" in it, but in another language. And while it was warm in St. John's today, it went up to about 28 degrees there today. Name the city.
